A student opened fire at Great Mills High School in southern Maryland on Tuesday morning, critically injuring two other students before he was confronted by a school resource officer, according to the St. Mary's County sheriff's office.

"I was watching the news this morning and it was just, I was just in shock honestly", said Mia Griffiths of St. Mary's College of Maryland. As Gaskill fired at Rollins, Rollins "almost simultaneously" fired his gun, Cameron said.

Emma Gonzalez, a Stoneman Douglas student, tweeted her support Tuesday for her peers at Great Mills.

Since then, a movement led by students from the Florida high school has pushed for increased gun-control measures. Two students were being treated for their injuries - with one in critical condition - and a school resource officer who fired at the gunman was unharmed. A 12-year-old girl was booked for negligent discharge of a firearm in that shooting, which was considered "unintentional", Los Angeles police said.

Federal agents completed an urgent trace request by the St. Mary's County Sheriff's Office for the history of the handgun. She also said she had no information about fatalities.

Following the shooting in Great Mills, located about a 90-minute drive southeast of the United States capital Washington, students were evacuated to a nearby school where they were reunited with their parents, Cameron said. Cameron said, adding the officerl "responded exactly how we train our personnel to respond". Hogan said no parent should have to worry when they send their kids to school if they will return safely. "If we see something that makes us feel unsure or uncomfortable, we will say something".

A day after the eruption of gun violence in one of the sleepy community's schools, the few residents who ventured out amid a snowstorm blanketing the East Coast praised a school resource officer who responded inside of 60 seconds and fired off a shot at the attacker.

The news site said the school principal said in a letter to parents that the school and law enforcement assessed the threat and that it "has not been validated at this time".

It occurred amid a re-energized national debate over school shootings in the United States following an attack on February 14 at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida, where a gunman killed 17 students and faculty.
