Not to be left out of the race to make cars smarter, the 2019 Ford Focus is said to feature more "advanced features" than any Ford before it.
Ford on Tuesday took the covers off a redesigned Focus in hatchback, sedan, and wagon body styles.
Each trim grade gets its own distinct look and materials, including fine-grain wood-effect finishes and premium leather for Vignale; sporty carbon fibre-effect finishes and red stitching for the ST-Line; and more rugged textured materials for the Active.
The front end of the vehicle also features a slightly different design to the rest of the range, in the same way that the Vignale and ST-Line models also feature bumpers that subtly communicate the cars' differing uses. You'll find improved versions of Active Park Assist and Pre-Collision Assist with Pedestrian and Cyclist Detection, too. The eight-speed automatic transmission, suspension setup and electric-assist power steering system are all new, and the auto will ride on a stiffer platform. The lighter 1.0-litre EcoBoost and 1.5-litre EcoBlue will use a torsion beam, which Ford would rather refer to as a twist-beam, but infused with Ford-patented force vectoring spring technology borrowed from the Fiesta ST. On a scale between evolutionary and revolutionary, the new Focus design isn't going to start any fires.

Ford has not matched the likes of Toyota or Volkswagen and brought hybrid, plug-in hybrid or electric versions of the new 2018 Focus to showrooms. Come late 2019, both the estate and hatchback ranges will be bolstered with warm ST versions.

Designed from a clean sheet of paper, Ford says the new Focus "ushers in a new era for technology, comfort, space and driving experience", and the line-up will include the first Focus Active crossover and range-topping Focus Vignale. An embedded modem turns the Focus into a mobile WiFi hotspot that provides connectivity for up to 10 different devices.
For the first time, buyers will be offered full-LED headlights with a matrix function to prevent dazzling other drivers. Other tech upgrades include Ford's Sync 3 infotainment system, an available eight-inch touchscreen, wireless smartphone charging and remote vehicle management.
For a family hatch, the last-generation Focus wasn't as practical as you might think, with limited rear space and a boot size that rivals easily exceeded.
