Hurricane Names Harvey, Irma, Maria And Nate Being Retired

Hurricane Nate didn't make landfall in the USA but slammed into Nicaragua and Panama as a Category 1, causing 44 deaths.

Irma remained at category 5 strength for 60 hours in early September on a trail of destruction through numerous Caribbean islands.

Harvey, which dumped up to five feet (1.52 m) of rain on southeast Texas, and Maria, which ravaged Puerto Rico and Dominica, are the second- and third-costliest storms in USA history, NOAA said. The organization says it retires names for hurricanes when "a storm is so deadly or costly that the future use of its name on a different storm would be inappropriate for reasons of sensitivity".

Four notable storms from the 2017 season had names that will no longer be used for hurricanes, according to the U.N. World Meteorological Organization: Harvey, Irma, Maria and Nate. It's the third costliest hurricane in US history.

Things you didn't know about Friday the 13th
Lawson's popular novel Friday, the Thirteenth, in 1907 contributed to popularising and spreading the superstition. Despite all of these, Italians regard this day as a lucky day and are filled with dread on Friday the 17th.

The hurricanes taken off the WMO's rotation of names caused 224 deaths during their tropical cyclone phases. Hundreds more were injured preparing for the storm, during it or in its aftermath.

Seventeen tropical storms were named in 2017, and 10 of those storms became hurricanes.

Hurricane Nate killed 45 people in Central America. The 2017 season fell one name short of tying the most names retired in a season, which was set in 2005 (Wilma, Rita, Stan, Dennis, and Katrina). An additional nine people were missing in the region.

The NOAA estimate of damage in Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands due to Maria is 90 billion dollars, which makes it the third costliest hurricane in U.S. history, behind Katrina (2005) and Harvey (2017).
