International Tributes Pour In for Milos Forman

The anti-authoritarian director who left Czechoslovakia in order to have the freedom to make films in the USA and captured Oscars for works of art like One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest and Amadeus, Milos Forman has passed away at 86.

Czech-born US director Milos Forman, known for the Oscar-winning classics, passes away after a brief illness in the US, Czech media report.

Other notable films by Forman include Hair in 1979, and The People vs Larry Flint in 1996, which was also nominated for an Academy Award, and Man on The Moon in 1996.

Forman was born in the Czech town of Caslav in 1932; after the Nazi occupation of Czechoslovakia, his mother died in concentration camps. "Though he blossomed in exile in 1970s America, his memory of totalitarianism would forever be his muse", writes Gina Piccalo at the Los Angeles Times.

Orphaned at nine when his parents died in a Nazi concentration camp, Forman launched his directing career in his native land, then known as Czechoslovakia, earning two Oscar nominations for Best Foreign Film before moving to the USA following the Warsaw Pact invasion of Poland in 1968. At his lowest point he was offered the chance to direct One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, another anti-authoritarian parable adapted from Ken Kesey's novel. The film garnered five Oscar wins - including Forman's first for Best Director - and it would help reunite the filmmaker with his sons. About a decade later, Forman again scored Academy Award success with Amadeus.

Milos Forman won his second best-director Oscar for "Amadeus" in 1985.

The Fireman's Ball was released in 1967 and Forman was then invited to the United States by Paramount Pictures to make a film in America.

Forman was married three times - his first two, to Jana Brejchová and Vera Kresadlova-Formanova ended in divorce - and had four children.
