Opposition leaders and rescuers say more than 40 people, including many women and children, died in the suspected chemical attack.

Canada became the latest to lay the blame for a deadly chemical-weapons attack in Syria last week at Syrian President Bashar Assad's doorstep, despite Russian suggestions to the contrary.

The report says Syria's air defenses confronted the missiles near Homs, and says the airstrikes also targeted an army depot there.

"More than 100 cruise missiles and air-to-land missiles were fired by the US, Britain and France from the sea and air at Syrian military and civilian targets", the ministry said in a statement quoted by RIA Novosti news agency, adding that "a significant number" were shot down by Syrian air defences. But that would draw the United States more deeply into the Syrian war, a step Trump has resisted, just as Barack Obama did. But that the USA did not want an "indefinite presence" in Syria and would only stay until Islamic State was destroyed.

The targets of that strike included Syrian aircraft, aircraft shelters, petroleum and logistical storage facilities, ammunition supply bunkers, air defense systems and radar.

"We can not allow the use of chemical weapons to become normalised - either within Syria, on the streets of the United Kingdom or elsewhere", May said.

Its foreign ministry said: "We welcome this operation which has eased humanity's conscience in the face of the attack in Douma".

Russian Federation reacted to the air strikes saying that once again they were being threatened and such actions by the U.S. will not be excused.
