AMD Ryzen 2nd Gen Processor Now Available For Preorder

AMD is hoping to continue the disruptive streak it began in the PC market a year ago by announcing the upcoming launch of its second-generation Ryzen desktop processors. Along with the 2nd gen Ryzen desktop processor collection will launch AMD X470 chipset motherboards.

The new CPU also comes with a new AMD X470 chipset, although the CPU is also backward-compatible with motherboards that support the first-generation Ryzen lineup. All four CPUs will be available on shelves worldwide on April 19, with pre-orders starting today.

Ryzen 5 2600 at £169 / $199. By upgrading their firmware with the newest BIOS updates available on the GIGABYTE official website, users can bring out the full potential of these AM4 motherboards with the Smart Fan 5 technology for cooling and Ultra-Durable PCIe armor for added durability.

"Second generation Ryzen desktop processors take everything that made the original Ryzen so groundbreaking and makes it better", said Jim Anderson, senior vice president and general manager, Computing and Graphics Group, AMD, "[that means] great performance combined with advanced technology to deliver an wonderful experience for the most demanding users". All also come with box coolers of varying qualities, which is a change on 1st-gen Ryzen where some X models did not include a cooler. Performance is expected to be higher than the previous Wraith Spire, which is still the default cooler option for the Ryzen 7 2700 and Ryzen 5 2600X. While not obvious by the model number, this is actually meant to replace the Ryzen 7 1800X, which is clocked at 3.6GHz to 4GHz. All we know for sure right now are the basic specifications of the four new SKUs. The Ryzen 5 2600 and 2600X are both 6-core/12-thread processors, while the Ryzen 7 2700 and 2700X are both 8-core/16-threads.

AMD broke Intel's more-than-decade-long dominance in the consumer CPU market in February 2017, when it unveiled the first chips from its new Zen architecture. Other than enabling new motherboard designs, perhaps the most intriguing feature of the X470 is AMD's new StoreMI technology, which lets you combine multiple SSDs and conventional hard drives into a single virtual volume and automatically assign files based on their storage speed requirements. There is going to be another big battle for the DIY space coming this spring, and we can't wait to share the first punches with you next week. A 5 or even 10% difference between the two could be shrugged off, but a 20% lead is a substantial advantage for an offering that both comes with it's own cooler, and even with that, is still a cheaper solution.
