Russia Condemns US Coalition Airstrikes Without Military Reaction

Iran's pragmatist President Hassan Rouhani also warned that the US-led missile attack on Syria would lead to further destruction in the Middle East.

"The U.S. - the possessor of the biggest arsenal of chemical weapons - has no moral right to blame other countries".

Meanwhile, Bouthaina Shabaan, the political and media adviser to President Bashar al-Assad, said Wednesday that her country is not fearing the USA threats of striking Syria.

"Russia vows to shoot down any and all missiles fired at Syria", Trump wrote. "Russian Federation will demand a meeting of the UN Security Council, I think, for sure", Dzhabarov, who is the deputy head of Russia's foreign affairs committee, was quoted by RIA as saying.

"Today, I called the Ambassadors of the five Permanent Members of the Security Council to reiterate my deep concern about the risks of the current impasse and stressed the need to avoid the situation spiraling out of control", he said, referring to the United States, Russia, China, France and Britain. The public must hold social media platforms accountable through regulations ensuring they are no longer used as a vehicle for attacks against the citizens of the United States and other democracies.

The warning came after United States said that it is planning to strike Syria in response to the alleged chemical attack in Damascus earlier this month, which killed dozens.

Russian Federation supports Syrian President Bashar al-Assad and has military personnel in Syria, creating a risk of armed confrontation between Washington and Moscow surrounding the country's long running civil war.

Russia's Defense Ministry said the allied missiles struck outside of Russia's area of responsibility in Syria, so Russian air defense systems did not respond, Russia's RIA Novosti reorted. The U.S. and allied approach "seems smart and concerted" while representing a "much larger strike than previous year", said Andrew Tabler of the Washington Institute for Near East Policy. Participants included Vice President Mike Pence, Defense Secretary Jim Mattis and John Bolton, Trump's new national security adviser.

Syrian regime forces says more than one 100 missiles were fired against a military base in Syria's central Homs province and the research centre in Barzeh, near Damascus.

Russia, at least in its public pronouncements, is also more determined not to back down. Both the Russian military and the Syrian government said they would facilitate the mission and ensure the inspectors' security.

The Russian defense ministry and the Kremlin had yet to make any comment on the strikes.

Meanwhile, the world is holding its breath. It was unclear whether his remarks reflected any unease about Trump's apparent move toward military action.

In February this year, USA forces working alongside Kurdish militia in the east of Syria clashed with regime forces and killed scores of Russians working as mercenaries. At the weekend, Israeli jets hit a Syrian airbase housing Iranian forces and Russian Federation did not respond. But reading between the lines, there was a second message: The incoming cruise missiles did not cross the threshold that would provoke a military response against Western forces.

"The current escalation of the situation around Syria has a devastating impact on the whole system of global relations", said Mr Putin.
