Kendrick Lamar wins a Pulitzer Prize for music


11-time Grammy victor Kendrick Lamar has won a Pulitzer Prize.

GQ received the Pulitzer Prize in Feature Writing for a profile of Dylann Roof, who shot and killed nine people at a SC church in 2015.

Kendrick Lamar on Monday became the first rapper to win the Pulitzer Prize for Music, a milestone for which the board cited his skill in telling the African American experience.

Dana Canedy, administrator of the Pulitzer prize and the first woman and person of colour to present the award, said: "We are very proud of this selection".

The music award was the last to be announced at the Pulitzer prize ceremony on Monday afternoon at Columbia University in New York City.

Lamar has been praised for his deep lyrical content, remarkable live performances and his profound mix of hip-hop, spoken word, jazz, soul, funk, poetry and African sounds.

In announcing the journalism prizes, Pulitzer administrator Dana Canedy said the winners "uphold the highest goal of a free and independent press, even in the most trying of times".

The 30-year-old won five Grammy awards for Damn, his fourth studio album, at this year's awards in January.

Rachel Kaadzi Ghansah, freelance reporter at GQ magazine was awarded the Pulitzer for feature writing; Jerry Saltz of NY magazine won for criticism; Andie Dominick of The Des Moines Register won for editorial writing. Late previous year, Lamar released a "collector's edition" of DAMN. with the original album's tracklist reversed - played back-to-front it revealed even more of the album's shifting, contrasting revelations of self. The best biography was found to be Prairie Fires: The American Dreams of Laura Ingalls Wilder by Caroline Fraser.

The news of the 2018 Pulitzer's victor sent a jolt across the classical music world as they still struggle to be heard, compete against the popular genre and this time avant-garde non-jazz and non-classical music washed them away. Most importantly, it showed me the true definition of what an artist was.
