Many districts, meanwhile, reopened again Monday after the Oklahoma Education Association, the state's largest teacher's union, announced late last week that they were ending the ongoing walkout after nine days.

But advocates are pushing for more because the state is now underfunding schools by about $830 million, Dallman said. The protest April 16 was organized by the Colorado Education Association, which represents more than 35,000 educators, many of whom say too many teachers in the state are forced to work second jobs and pay out of pocket for classroom supplies.

The state budget for next year includes $150 million in increased school funding, but lawmakers have not committed to continuing that increase in future years.

"We have a team working on action plans to help everybody learn and grow on how to respond to our students", Smith said. "We need a viable profession". He likened being a teacher to "becoming a father".

Colorado's average teacher salary - $46,155 - ranks 46th in the country.
