JK govt orders closure of coaching centres in Kashmir, triggers anger

"The rape and murder of eight year old girl child shook entire world and at the same time the incident has refreshed our old wounds and reminded Kashmiris of many similar brutal mass rape and murders committed here by the forces who continue to roam freely", he said.

"As the said order has been passed in the context of student protests, it is pertinent to mention here that all student protests over the last two months originated in schools and not coaching institutes".

Bukhari also asked the director of school education, Kashmir to submit a list of teachers, masters and lecturers who work in private coaching centres.

The decision comes just a day after Bukhari had advised students to control their emotions and resume classes. "There are several instances in our notice where students took to protests when they weren't allowed inside school for being late", he said. Various principals in a meeting told the Education Minister Altaf Bukhari that police interferes with the peaceful protests of the students. "The case is in court and justice will be done", but his answers fail to calm down the protesting students.

The students of Law College Sopore assembled at Amargrah where from they took out a peaceful protest rally which culminated at Sangrama Chowk. It is very likely that many of these educational institutions will remain shut Monday onwards as well.

The minister, however, insisted that student protests did not guide the decision.

A spate of civilian killings this year has sparked anger across the Valley. I am confident that they will go back to their classes, " he said.

Earlier, the state government, conscious of the fallout of fighting students on the streets, understood the trick and closed down educational institutions. "I am not against the tuition centres but if they become a part of a problem then I am left with no option but to close them", he said.

Students reacted with shock to the government's decision.

Stating that he was surprised with parents worrying over the closure of coaching centres, Bukhari said: "Coaching is only needed when the school system is not good". We will pass an official order for coaching centres to shut their shops for a while. "The other important aspect related to the ban is the employment of thousands of highly qualified youth not in government sector running these coaching centres".
