The NTSB also said it was investigating an August 2017 Tesla battery fire in Lake Forest, California, after an owner lost control and ran the vehicle into his garage.

According to local police, cited by NBC Miami, the cause of the crash seems to have been excessive speed.

A backseat passenger, identified as 18-year-old Alexander Berry of Fort Lauderdale, was thrown from the vehicle and taken to a hospital with undisclosed injuries, according to ABC Miami affiliate WPLG-TV.

The National Transportation Safety Board has dispatched a team of investigators to the Florida site of a crash and fire involving a Tesla Model S electric auto in which two teenagers died. The NTSB says it does not expect Tesla's Autopilot system to be part of the probe. Tesla had said it withdrew from the investigation, and that the agency had violated its own rules by releasing "incomplete information to the media". A probe is under way into a fire in a Tesla Model X SUV that crashed near Mountain View, California, on March 23.

The teens, both students at Pine Crest School in Fort Lauderdale, were a few weeks away from graduation.

Police say the Tesla in Fort Lauderdale with three teenagers inside crashed into a wall and caught fire on Tuesday evening. Stephanie Palmer, with the Coral Springs Parkland Fire Department, says firefighters are now trained to look out for electrical cars' orange wires.
