Storm alert: Dos and don'ts for residents, travel advisory for commuters

Criticised for issuing an alert for a thunderstorm that triggered widespread panic among people, especially in Delhi, the Met department Wednesday said the wind speed observed was well within the range of what it had forecast. The wind speed last night was 70 kilometres per hour. The IMD report added that thunderstorm accompanied with gusty winds very likely at isolated places over Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, south interior Karnataka on May 14, Monday.

In a breaking news, a 4.9 low magnitude quake hits Delhi, Chandigarh and some areas of Punjab, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh and Jammu & Kashmir. For the weather warning issued by the met office on Monday, thunderstorm was expected in Delhi on Tuesday evening. Dustorms very likely at isolated places over western Uttar Pradesh.

The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) and Delhi police have also issued an advisory on the precautions to be taken during the thunderstorm.

Earlier today, a dust storm was also reported from Rajasthan's Bikaner and Jaisalmer districts. Ambala, Panchkula, Mohali and Patiala were also hit by rain in the two states.
