Sereno unseated as Chief Justice

"The reputation and esteem of this present Supreme Court will now rise or fall on the basis of the soundness or unsoundness of this controversial decision upholding a very unusual remedy to oust a sitting Chief Justice", he said.

Sereno's camp has yet to appeal the SC decision.

The Chief Justice filed her comment on the quo warranto petition filed by Solicitor General Jose Calida.

Senate President Aquilino Pimentel III, a key ally of Duterte, agreed with Sereno and urged the Supreme Court to review its decision, saying it's "not infallible in everything".

Maria Lourdes Sereno has been unseated as the Supreme Court (SC) Chief Justice making her the first constitutional officer to be removed not by impeachment.

Trump pulls United States out of 'horrible' Iran nuclear accord
New Zealand exported $120 million of goods to Iran previous year , with dairy products making up three-quarters of that. The worst case is war in the Middle East or a nuclear-armed Iran that is willing to strike at America.

Court spokesman Theodore Te says eight of 14 justices voted Friday to remove Sereno from the 15-member tribunal for allegedly failing to file statements of assets and liabilities as required by law.

Solicitor General Jose Calida can now add this to his list of won cases: ousting a Chief Justice in a process different from impeachment.

"This decision is the epitome of its exercise of judicial independence", Calida said in a statement on Friday, May 11, just after the SC en banc chose to oust Sereno by a tight vote of 8-6.

Aside from a government petition to declare Sereno ineligible to lead the Supreme Court over her alleged failure to declare her wealth before she became chief justice, she also faced an impeachment complaint in the House of Representatives.

The Supreme Court (SC) may be the final arbiter of law, but not on "impeachment matters".
