In recent years, women and children's rights activists have increasingly campaigned against forced marriages of girls and marriage of underage girls, a widespread phenomenon in Sudan, where the law allows children over the age of 10 to marry.

Rights group Amnesty International on Thursday slammed a Sudanese court's sentencing of a teenager to death for killing her rapist husband in self-defence. Her husband's family refused an option to pardon her and turned down an offer to be compensated financially, requesting instead that she be executed.

Noura's legal team according to reports have 15 days to appeal the death sentence. "She's still in complete shock after her sentencing today", Dr. Adil Mohamed Al-Imam, one of Hussein's lawyers, told CNN.

"Noura Hussein's life-long wish was to become a teacher but she ended up being forced to marry an abusive man who raped and brutalised her", Magango added. And in recent days it has captured global attention with the hashtags #JusticeforNoura and #SaveNoura.
