Caged tiger at school's prom causes uproar among some parents, reports say

According to Local 10, the incident happened over the weekend during Christopher Columbus High School's prom in Miami.

Castellanos told CBS Miami that she and her family have always been animal rights activists, and said she believes having the tiger at the prom was a clear case of animal abuse.

The dance took place at the Double Tree Hilton Miami Airport Convention Center, and the appearance of the animals was approved by the school and the venue. "It is not the student [sic] fault to be so naive BUT it's the CCHS STAFF who arranged this event, there for they are responsible for this tigers misery".

Yes, in a truly, madly, and deeply American fashion, students of the school enjoying their prom (this is some sort of American word, I'm not entirely sure what it means) on Friday night were treated to the sight of a caged tiger, alongside other caged animals including a fennec fox, a lemur, two macaws, and various other birds.

Mari-Chris Castellanos, whose brother attends the all-boys private school, posted on Facebook and said the tiger "was used as an exotic amusement for the mindless teenagers who were present". Well, it is highly weird of the school to get in animals and in a way promoting a message that animals are for the amusement of children. Although the school tried to provide a certain ambiance and theme for their dance, it appears that it was only concerned with following protocol, and didn't think through the implications of a live tiger in a loud and crowded event.

"This tiger's not having a party", Magill told ABC News.

The school also released a statement defending the cruel act. "He was surrounded by people, cell phones, lights, jugglers juggling fire. The animals were provided by facilities that are licensed by the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission", the statement read.

As Magill pointed out, the tiger displayed obvious signs of distress.

But the party took a weird turn when the entertainment of choice was revealed to be a caged tiger, which was put on display in the middle of the party.

"Upon reflection, we regret the decision to have live animals at our prom", he said. In a statement to reporters, the school would later call this "a relaxed state" - though the animal's emotions are less clear in student video footage.
