Xiaomi planning separate camera division for its smartphones

The company has posted a teaser on Twitter for a new selfie smartphone launch in India on June 7 without naming it. In the quarter, Xiaomi maintained its No 1 spot with more than 30% share, followed by Samsung at 25%, Oppo, Vivo, and Transsion - which sells Itel, Tecno and Infinix brands - making its entry in the top five smartphone players.

The reason this has more than a grain of truth is that Xiaomi clearly has designs on becoming one of the leaders in the global smartphone market, and to do so means having truly world-class technology inside its devices.

The selfie camera is Xiaomi newly discovered USP and the Redmi Y2 will build on that feature. However, the smartphone could be launched in India with a different moniker under the Redmi Y series, maybe as Redmi Y2.

In terms of camera performance, the Xiaomi Redmi S2 features dual rear camera at the back coming at 12MP + 5MP with LED flash. The strategy has worked well for the company not only in China but also in India, where it has surpassed Samsung as the leading smartphone maker.
