Anwar walks out of hospital a free man


The volatile relationship between Mahathir and Anwar has dominated Malaysia's political landscape for over three decades and is central to the future of the alliance.

The appointment of PKR de facto leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim as the eighth prime minister of Malaysia will not be made in haste, said his wife Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail who has been named the new deputy prime minister.

Mahathir said he will initially stay in the role of prime minister for "one to two years", and Wan Azizah confirmed that a transition of power will occur around the administration's mid-term.

PKR communications director Fahmi Fadzil said earlier that Anwar is scheduled to hold a press conference at his home in Segambut at around 4pm.

Mr Anwar, who was formerly Dr Mahathir's political rival, has been promised leadership of Malaysia's new governing coalition when Dr Mahathir, 92, decides to step down.

Anwar, who was the deputy prime minister during Mahathir's premiership in the 1990s, is now in a hospital in Cheras, waiting for the Pardons Board meeting, scheduled for Wednesday morning, said Bernama.

Malaysia's king has agreed to pardon him, paving the way for his return to politics.

The former prime minister has been blocked from leaving the country and a complaint has been filed against him to the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission alleging he personally blocked an investigation into the US$3.2bn 1MDB scandal. He was then convicted and jailed again for a second five year on a second trumped up sodomy charge during the rule of Najib. Wearing a white shirt printed with a photograph of Anwar and the words "March 2 Freedom", he said he nevertheless believed Anwar and Mahathir could work together and that the alliance's prospects were good.

Until then, Anwar will first need to be elected into parliament.

The pair fell out spectacularly and Anwar was jailed, during Mahathir's first period of 22 years as prime minister, for a five year period in 1999 on trumped-up sodomy charges.
