Israel said it is defending its border and accuses Hamas of trying to carry out attacks under the cover of the protests.

After Israeli troops killed at least 60 Palestinians, several of them children or teenagers, and injured more than 2,000 while the Trump administration celebrated the opening of the United States embassy in Jerusalem, many American politicians-Democrats and Republicans alike-failed to condemn the bloodshed.

The Gaza Strip awoke Tuesday to a grim agenda: Funerals for protesters killed along the fence bordering Israel, including one for an 8-month-old baby girl overcome by tear gas; and still-frenzied work treating the thousands of people wounded, in hospitals so overrun with patients that tents were set up in their courtyards.

The killings took place during a huge protest by more than 40,000 Palestinians at a dozen sites on the border between Gaza and Israel.
