Florida declares state of emergency ahead of storm Alberto


Tropical Storm Warnings are in effect along the entire Gulf Coast.

Alberto is expected to travel across the eastern Gulf of Mexico Saturday night through Monday and approach the northern part of the Gulf where it could make landfall Monday night.

Rick Scott issued the declaration for all 67 counties in his state.

Gov. Phil Bryant signed a proclamation Saturday morning declaring a state of emergency ahead of Alberto's landfall. Ivey activated the state's emergency operations center while the Alabama National Guard activated its high water evacuation teams.

"The combination of storm surge and the tide will cause normally dry areas near the coast to be flooded by rising waters moving inland from the shoreline", the National Hurricane Center in Miami said. Along with heavy rains and high winds come rough seas and a threat of rip currents from Florida to Louisiana that can sweep swimmers out to sea.
