Packaging error leads to nationwide birth control pill recall

Allergan has recalled nearly 170,000 sample packs of birth control pills nationwide because of a packaging error that could put consumers at risk for unintended pregnancy.

The drugmaker said Tuesday the physician sample packs of Taytulla were created to have 24 active birth control pills, followed by four placebo pills, taken daily over the course of 28 days. Instead, the fault packs had marron placebos at the start of the treatment.

Allergan said it was notifying consumers by letter of the potential trouble.

The voluntary recall, issued late Tuesday, affects packages of Allergan's Taytulla contraceptive pills. Allergan provided a chart, below, outlining the pill packs in question. "Given the nature of the issue, controls and inspections in place on the packaging line, the recall is limited to one lot of Taytulla".

Allergan also provided photos of the correctly and incorrectly packaged pill packs. Those placebo pills have "WC" imprinted on them. "The reversing of the order may not be apparent to either new users or previous users of the product, increasing the likelihood of taking the capsules out of order", a news release said. May 2019. The drug maker urged patients to consult their physicians if they think they are affected by the recall.

The sample packs have been in circulation nationwide since August. The company learned about the error after one physician reported it. The recall specifically affects the 6x28 physicians sample pack with Lot #5620706 (Exp 05/2019). In January the company cut 1,400 jobs, and then later received bad publicity when a proposed deal with a Native American tribe was unsuccessful.
