With one more person succumbing to the deadly Nipah virus (NiV) on Thursday, the death toll in Kerala has now jumped to 16. Kerala Health Minister K K Shailaja called for an emergency meeting that will take place this afternoon.

The IMA voted with its feet while taking a 300-strong contingent to Thiruvananthapuram for its conference, boosting the morale of the state administration in no small measure. All body fluid of the infected person contains the virus which can be transmitted to another by direct exposure to these fluids or through contact of blood of the two persons. The instruction was issued on the basis of the assumption that a person who had died the other day had contracted the virus during treatment there.

"We are getting ready to tackle the second phase as there are chances that the virus has spread as it is contagious", the state health minister said. Earlier samples of cattle, goats, pigs, insect bats were also tested negative. The condition of the other two patients is stable. And while the new academic year began on Friday in all schools in the state, schools in Kozhikode will open only on June 5.

On Wednesday night, Akihil Karasserry (28) and Madusudhanan (56) died in Kozhikode Medical College Hospital.

"Of the 18 positive cases, 16 have died and the remaining two are recovering well at the Kozhikode hospital".

Alarmed after Nipah claimed the life of a superintendent of Kozhikode district court complex, the district bar association asked the collector to temporarily shut the court.

- Health Minister KK Shailaja said, as quoted by news agency PTI: "As a precautionary measure, it has been made a decision to further postpone the re-opening of schools and colleges and holding of examinations". Eleven of them have shown symptoms and are under quarantine while about 1,500 suspects are under home quarantine, reported NDTV.

The MoPH has maintained strict control and surveillance at the various ports of entry to Qatar and urged residents not to travel to Kerala unless it is unavoidable until the spread of the disease is contained.
