Today, Nigeria joins the rest of the global community to mark this year's World Environment Day (WED).
This year the day was running under the theme of "Beat Plastic Pollution".
Rwanda on May 29 launched the national environment week featuring different awareness activities aimed at addressing plastic pollution, such as countrywide inspection of the illegal use of plastic bags and exhibition on plastic recycling.
The issue of plastic pollution in the world's oceans has soared up the agenda following the BBC's Blue Planet II and campaigns by many organisations, with two-thirds of people (67%) more concerned than a year ago, the poll found.
The UN Environment Program (UNEP) released on Tuesday the first comprehensive global assessment of government action against plastic pollution, and also offered a roadmap for policymakers worldwide.
They urged individuals to reject plastic cutlery, pick-up any plastic they see while on a walk and create awareness on the dangers of plastics pollution among friends and family.
"Targeted levies and bans - where properly planned and enforced - have been among the most effective strategies to limit overuse of disposable plastic products", the report said.Читайте также: Durango fire map: Wildfire rips through Colorado - Has Durango been evacuated?

"Plastics can not be recycled nor transformed".
He also pointed out that plastic pollution was now entering into the food chain and micro plastics had even entered basic things such as salt, bottled water and tap water. He called on people to pledge to eliminate all single-use plastic from India by 2022.
"In addition, action will drive the kind of innovation that will underpin the future global economy we need", said head of U.N. Environment Erik Solheim.
The objective of celebrating world environment day is to bring worldwide focus on importance of environment and to stimulate attention and actions for improving the environment. "Plastic materials contain a number of toxic chemicals that can endanger the environment, wildlife and human life".
"At one month post launching this initiative, we saw a drop in the dry waste accumulation from 190 kgs to 100 kgs".
Up to five trillion plastic bags are used each year, and 13 million tonnes of plastic leaks into the oceans annually. They also present a major problem as they are non-renewable, thus exposing the environment to many toxins, including carcinogens.При любом использовании материалов сайта и дочерних проектов, гиперссылка на обязательна.
