An England team showing 10 changes from Saturday's victory over Nigeria, from which only a handful will start their first group game against Tunisia, were too game for Costa Rica, harrying the South Americans before and after the Rashford's brilliant 13th-minute opener.

England beat Costa Rica 2-0 at Elland Road in the Three Lions' final warm-up game for the World Cup. It was a wonderful strike for the goal and he worked incredibly hard for the team. "He played with a real swagger", said Southgate. "(Fabian) Delph as a number eight is different from Dele (Alli) as a number eight".

There have been suggestions that Rashford could seek a move this summer in order to get extra minutes and avoid stalling his development as a player.

Danny Welbeck has taken a thinly-veiled swipe at Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho by claiming that Marcus Rashford is free to "express himself" when on worldwide duty with England.

To prove the point, Sterling hasn't scored in his last 20 games for England, stretching back to 2015.

For England, Jack Butland started in goal, back at the scene of a loan spell which comprehensively destroyed his World Cup chances in 2014.

Over the course of last season, Mourinho opted to play Romelu Lukaku as his only striker. And it would nearly certainly mean no starting place for Raheem Sterling. "If you look at the adversity they've faced, it's brought them closer".

"My most outstanding moments watching England were Michael Owen's goal (against Argentina) in '98 and Beckham's free-kick against Greece at Old Trafford".

The link-up play between Loftus-Cheek and Rashford on England's right-hand side, causing problems for Costa Rica's defence with the pair constantly fouled as they formed most of the attack - Loftus-Cheek was fouled more than any other player (five) and also completed 100% of his 34 passes.

Then there's Alexander-Arnold who made his debut against Costa Rica but played with confidence of a man with 30 caps.
