Mr. Trudeau's office responded to Mr. Trump's tweets accusing the Canadian leader of "false statements" on Saturday, saying that the Prime Minister said nothing during the G7 summit that he had not said previously.

"These are jointly shared principles, although the pitfalls lie in the details", German Chancellor Angela Merkel said in a press conference before the release of the communique.

Before Trudeau's announcement, there had been speculation that the US might be excluded from the communique due to high tensions between Trump and some G-7 leaders over recently imposed tariffs on steel and aluminum imports.

US President Donald Trump has left following his brief trip to Canada saying his relationship with the G7 countries is a 10 out of 10, and reports of rifts between the powerful countries are simply "fake news".

Instead, a chairman's statement from the host Trudeau could be produced, setting out what was discussed and where agreement had been impossible.

But the attempts to convey at least a semblance of unity were undermined when Canada's Prime Minister Justin Trudeau confirmed he was going ahead with his tariffs against the U.S. in response to USA moves against his country's steel and aluminum industries. The president also tweeted that he was revoking US endorsement of the summit's final joint statement. "Our Tariffs are in response to his of 270% on dairy!" the U.S. president tweeted.

"The other countries of the G-6 are a larger market than the American market", Macron said.

The joint communique, advocating a "rules-based trading system", was reached despite tension over USA tariffs on steel and aluminium imports. Trump had reportedly pushed back on language surrounding climate change, and the final text of the joint statement made clear that the US did not agree with language surrounding the issue.

Several of the leaders responded aggressively to Mr Trump's demands, listing their own complaints about USA policies on tariffs and other trade measures, the official said.

"In one way, it's easier and people find it fascinating", Trump said about the celebrity pardons in particular.

Mr Trump said the move would protect domestic producers that were vital to United States security.

Trudeau said his nation is insulted that Trump unilaterally imposed stiff tariffs on Canada for "national security" reasons.

This year's G7 summit had been dubbed "G6-plus-1" by many, referring to U.S. isolation over issues including trade and the Iran nuclear deal.

The US has slapped a 25% tariff on imports of steel and 10% on aluminium from countries including the United Kingdom and the rest of the European Union.

Briefing reporters immediately before cutting short his stay at the conference in Quebec and heading to Singapore for a nuclear summit with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, Trump firmly denied the G7 meeting had been contentious.

He also tweeted defiantly about not allowing "other countries to impose massive tariffs and trade barriers on its farmers, workers and companies".

Trudeau added that he had not agreed to a new North American Free Trade Agreement with a sunset clause. Earlier this week, Merkel said the group is defined by its members' respect of worldwide law, and Russia's 2014 annexation of Crimea was a "flagrant breach" of that.
