Overall, the name fits in Porsche naming nomenclator. That's an huge improvement over current electric vehicles and this should help to make the model more appealing to consumers. Porsche also promises a driving range over 311 miles (500 kilometers) on a charge.

Porsche continues to prepare its assault on Tesla, and on Friday the German automaker announced the production version of the Mission E concept will be called the Porsche Taycan (pronounced "tie-con").

According to a report from Reuters, Porsche made the announcement earlier today, with Porsche CEO Oliver Blume noting that "Taycan" means a lively and young horse, a creature which of course can be found on the Porsche logo. Porsche has said that when the Taycan goes on sale, it'll recharge from empty to 80 percent in 20 minutes, which the company has already called "Turbo Charging".

Google releases ethical principles created to govern company's work on AI tech
The goal of this project was to process and catalog drone imagery, and Google's rank-and-file workers were none too pleased. Pichai's assertions about not using AI for surveillance also left something to be desired, Eckersley added.

As we previously reported, Porsche's first electric vehicle will feature two motors contributing to a system output of more than 600 horsepower.

It's worth noting that the Taycan name only applies to the Mission E sedan and not its Cross Turismo SUV-ish variant. "The name has its linguistic roots in the East", it claims.

"Our new electric sports auto is strong and dependable; it's a vehicle that can consistently cover long distances, and that epitomizes freedom", said in a statement Oliver Blume, chairman of Porsche's board. And we thought Volkswagen using Touareg was bad.

Interest in the Taycan has already been huge, Porsche says, though sales aren't expected to kick off in the U.S. for some time yet. Exactly when that'll translate to cars arriving on American roads hasn't been shared, though we'd expect a late 2019 debut for that. Porsche also says that it has "a continuous power level that is unprecedented among electric vehicles".

Porsche said it's planning to spend €6 billion on electromobility by 2022.
