Trump said on the eve of his historic summit with Kim Jong-un that he thinks "things can work out very nicely" with North Korea.

Meanwhile, Law and Home Affairs Minister Shanmugam is confident that security is in place for the Trump-Kim summit.

Pompeo has maintained that complete, verifiable and irreversible denuclearization is the "only outcome" acceptable to the US and that the Trump administration hopes ultimately to reach an agreement with the North Koreans that it can submit to Congress "so that when administrations do change, as they inevitably do, and this one will ... that Chairman Kim will have comfort that American policy will continue down the same path".

Differing reports stated that Kim was on an Air China aircraft, not a private jet.

If Kim makes such a change, he said, "President Trump is prepared to assure that there's going to be a successful transition".

He also shared a photo of himself and Trump and told the entire world that he's "honored" to call the president a friend. "And we'll see how far we get, but I'm very optimistic", he continued.

The meeting will be monitored and dissected around the globe for a sense of whether one of the world's greatest national security threats - Kim's nuclear arsenal - can be solved.

The meeting was kicking off at 9 a.m. local time Tuesday with a handshake between Trump and Kim.

"I can only say this", Pompeo said.

They also mention the objective of his trip, a "historic first meeting with the United States president", describing not only Mr Kim's itinerary but also the fact that he used a Chinese plane to fly to Singapore, rather than his own personal jet.

The former businessman said he has spend a lifetime preparing for negotiations of this type, and predicted he would know in an instant if Kim is serious about the topic of denuclearisation. "I'll tell you what the Marshall wants more than anything".
