SC primary voters like Trump's tax cuts, medical marijuana

After he winning back his old US House seat, he nurtured an independent streak, rapidly tiring of Trump's brash leadership style and reportedly branding the president's imposition of steel and aluminium tariffs "an experiment with stupidity".

With 65 percent reporting, first-term state Rep. Katie Arrington is on the verge of unseating a S.C. political fixture for the past 25 years.

Sanford told his supporters shortly before 11 p.m. he was likely to lose his bid for re-election Tuesday night.

Unable to muster 50 percent of the Republican primary vote for governor, South Carolina Gov. Henry McMaster, one of Trump's top allies in the state, was forced into a runoff for the GOP nomination. Trump, who came out in support of Sanford's opponent Katie Arrington hours before the polls closed, took credit for the results Wednesday.

Arrington's campaign was based on the premise that Sanford - who has criticized Trump's style and questioned his knowledge - is insufficiently supportive of the President.

When Sanford was governor of SC it was revealed he was having an extra marital affair when he claimed he was hiking the Appalachian Trail but was actually in Argentina with his lover, María Belén Chapur.

On Fox News Sunday , White House Director of Trade Policy Peter Navarro also defended the president with adversarial language. All lawmakers gave a standing ovation for the government's response to the Trump administration's verbal attacks on Trudeau .

He said he does not regret being critical of Trump.

"He is MIA and nothing but trouble", Trump tweeted, adding, "He is better off in Argentina". "Bless his heart - but it's time for Mark Sanford to take a hike - for real this time".

In a statement, Mike Biundo, a consultant for Arrington's campaign and a veteran Republican operative, said: "The president's endorsement is very important". "I look forward to working together with him to drain the swamp and continue making America great again". The president himself weighed in by stoking memories of the affair, tweeting that Sanford was "better off in Argentina".

This was Sanford's second stint serving as representative of South Carolina's 1st District. It's the same reason Alabama Rep. Martha Roby, who blasted Trump after the "Access Hollywood" tape became public in 2016, is headed to a runoff to defend her seat.

Throughout his political career, Sanford has played up his outsider credentials - both in the U.S. House, where he supported a box to check on federal tax returns to put $3 toward the national debt, and as governor, bringing a pair of squealing pigs to the state House and Senate chamber to protest what he call pork spending. And in a crucial race for Republicans in the Senate, Trump's pick easily won the nomination to run against Democratic Sen.

In North Dakota, Rep. Kevin Cramer won the Republican nomination for Senate and will face Democratic incumbent Heidi Heitkamp, who had no primary challenger.

The big takeaway from Sanford's loss is this: Republican lawmakers who speak out against Trump risk losing their jobs.

Rematches: In 2014, Nevada politics watchers were shocked when Democratic congressman Steven Horsford, a rising political star, lost his outer Las Vegas area district to an unpolished newcomer, Republican Cresent Hardy.

Warren, who only entered the race in February, served as a Marine and has largely self-funded his campaign, contributing more than $3 million toward his coffers. The eventual victor will challenge Republican Rep. Bruce Poliquin.
