Chipotle reopens in Ohio after reports of illnesses

Business Insider reported late-Monday that more than 170 people said they fell ill after eating at a restaurant in OH. Health officials said people who said they ate at the restaurant complained of symptoms ranging from nausea, vomiting and diarrhea after eating at the restaurant between Thursday and Monday.

Reports of illness first surfaced Sunday on the website iwaspoisoned.com, and surged into the hundreds following Business Insider's report.

More than 170 people fell ill after eating at a Chipotle location in OH, prompting the chain to quickly close the restaurant after the news surfaced.

"Our protocols identified a handful of illness reports at one restaurant in Powell, OH", Chipotle spokeswoman Laurie Schalow told CNBC.

As of Wednesday morning, county health officials said they had received another 45 inquires related to a possible foodborne illness outbreak stemming from the reopened restaurant, bringing to 413 the total number of illness claims tied to the location.

Chipotle said it planned to reopen the OH restaurant on Tuesday after it deep cleaned the restaurant and removed all exposed foods and single-use equipment, pending approval from the local health department.

Although there is now no indication that the outbreak has affected consumers in other states, Chipotle's stock fell almost 4 percent after news of the closing of the Powell location.

The illnesses prompted Chipotle to close at least one restaurant on Monday.

In after-hours trading, the burrito chain's shares were down 3.34 percent to $449.95. "Chipotle's increased focus on food safety and enhancing customer experience, along with various sales-building and strategic initiatives, are likely to drive the top line while high costs and intense competition may be concerning in the future".

In June, Chipotle announced it was closing down as many as 65 underperforming restaurants across the world. The company offers three days of paid sick leave each year to all of its employees, a spokesperson said. Chipotle Mexican Grill's new CEO, Brian Niccol, made the announcement in a conference call with investors, according to a previous Epoch Times report.
