The remaining 1% will be kept in the dark about their social media usage so Facebook can monitor whether the new dashboards actually cause users to cut back.

In a statement, the social media giants - which are both owned by Facebook - announced "new tools to help people manage their time" spent on the platforms.

Ameet Ranadive, product management director at Instagram, and David Ginsberg, director of research at Facebook, said the tools were created to give users more control over their time.

At the top, you'll see a dashboard showing your average time for that app on that device.

You can receive a push notification once you've reached your selected cut-off time for, as an example, 25 minutes a day.

One of the main criticisms levelled at the social media giants has been their effect on mental health, and late past year Facebook published a post acknowledging the negative effects of spending too much passive time on the platform.
