Virus briefly halts production at iPhone chip-maker TSMC

The chipmaker for Apple has warned shipments of the new iPhones could be delayed after its production line was hit by a computer virus. The firm publicly disclosed the attack on Sunday, revealing that it had recovered 80 percent of its impacted tools and was on track to a full resolution by today.

TSMC said that third-quarter shipments delays would be recovered next quarter. The company has restored output since then but said the incident would delay shipments, without specifying what customers will be affected. After the virus got onto some of the factory computers, some of its fabrication tools had become infected.

Earlier, Lise Grande, the United Nations humanitarian coordinator for Yemen, condemned the hospital attack as "shocking". Eyewitnesses described seeing debris and two damaged ambulances close to a local hospital.

Apple did not immediately respond to a Reuters request for comment. More detailed information on the situation will be shared on Monday. To the big questions concerning the financial impact of the virus attack, and the production impact, the TSMC representative was reticent to answer.
