Barack Obama Day is a commemorative day, not a legal state holiday.

The original bill would have called for schools and state offices to close. "Happy birthday to my brother, my friend, @BarackObama", Biden wrote.

Another tweeted: "Happy #ObamaDay folks!"

Stealing the show, Barack Obama was not the only celebrity turning a year older. The bill was signed into law on August 6, 2017, making this year the first time it's actually celebrated.

Before becoming the 44th president of the United States, Obama was a member of the IL state Senate and later a US senator representing IL in Congress.

The bill establishing Obama's birthday as a state holiday unanimously passed the IL state legislature a year ago, and Republican Gov. Bruce Rauner signed the measure into law on August 6, 2017.

"It's incredibly proud for IL that the president came from IL. I think it's awesome, and I think we should celebrate it", he said.

Of course, Obama's best friend and former vice president Joe Biden also sent out a birthday message.

In the meantime, Obama's spokesperson told USA Today that he will celebrate his 57th birthday with his family in Washington D.C. today. Alongside a selfie of the pair smiling together, he tweeted, "Our lunches together were a highlight of every week at the White House". "Last week's trip to Dog Tag Bakery was no different".
