Hurricane Hector is tracking for a close call with Hawaii's Big Island, parts of which are still coping with destruction from the ongoing eruption of the Kilauea volcano.

The storm was centered about 1,160 miles (1,870 kilometers) west of the Azores and was moving north near 16 mph (26 kph). However, tropical-storm-force winds and pounding, unsafe surf are possible late Tuesday and Wednesday.

Swells from Hector will produce surf heights from 12 to 15 feet on east-facing shores mainly for the Puna and Kau districts of the Big Island Wednesday, according to the National Weather Service.

"A few heavier showers are possible in the east and north on Friday morning, but the overall trend of the day is for the showers to ease from the south, becoming increasingly isolated during the afternoon". "There is a reasonable chance that Hector will survive to cross the International Date Line early next week", said AccuWeather meteorologist Steve Travis.

"Maximum sustained winds are near 40 miles per hour [65 km/h] with higher gusts".
