According to the agency, only 149 people are stuck on top of Mount Rinjani itself, while around 500 hikers are stranded in the Sembalun Village, which is located along the volcanic mountain's slope.

Meanwhile, the husband of Malaysian hiker Siti Nur Iesmawida Ismail, who tragically died in the Lombok quake, flew to Indonesia today.

At least 543 tourists have been rescued from a mountain in tourist destination of Lombok Island of central Indonesia after a strong quake cut off routes, a government official said on Tuesday.

"We did not detect any potential for a tsunami but the natural disaster lasted quite a while in all regencies and municipalities in West Nusa Tenggara province, spreading panic among the people", BMKG Mataram head Agus Riyanto said in a report by the Jakarta Post.

Rescuers are trying to evacuate hundreds of tourists stranded on Mount Rinjani on the Indonesian island of Lombok after a deadly quake triggered landslides.

A strong and shallow natural disaster early Sunday killed more than a dozen people on Indonesia's Lombok island, a popular tourist destination next to Bali, officials said.

Helicopters and search teams had been deployed to scour the mountain's slopes and drop food supplies for those stranded on it.

In a letter to Indonesian President Joko Widodo, Mr Lee said that he was "deeply saddened" by the incident, which left at least 16 people dead and hundreds injured.
