Palestinians killed by Israeli shelling in northern Gaza

A statement by the Israeli military said: "A short while ago, terrorists fired shots towards IDF (Israel Defence Forces) soldiers near the northern Gaza Strip from a Hamas post".

Israel accuses the Islamist Hamas movement, which has been controlling the coastal enclave since 2007, of using the protests as a cover to damage the border fence, infiltrate the Israeli territory and launch attacks.

The Gaza Health Ministry say pregnant 23-year-old Enas Khammash and her 18-month daughter were killed in Jafarawi in central Gaza. One vehicle was hit, the IDF Spokesman's Unit said; IDF tanks responded by attacking a Hamas position in the region.

At least two Palestinians were martyred on Tuesday when Israel shelled a Hamas site in the northern Gaza Strip, Gaza's Health Ministry said in a statement. "In response, an IDF tank targeted the post from which the shots were fired".

The Palestinian news agency Wafa reported that the incident was "expected to destroy Egypt and the UN's efforts to achieve a long-term ceasefire" between Israel and Hamas.
