While the trade maintains the anonymity of the executives, they do confirm that numerous top studios in Hollywood are interested in Gunn, including Warner Bros. which rivals Marvel Studios in the superhero entertainment business with DC Films. One exec claimed that, while Disney had fired Gunn from Guardians of the Galaxy, that wasn't an end-all verdict on a potential working relationship.

Since his firing, the entire Guardians of the Galaxy cast has signed an open letter with the implicit demand of getting Gunn rehired, while that looks like it hasn't come to pass, Kurt Russell has said he hopes Gunn is "forgiven" and actor Dave Bautista has said he wants to be let go of Disney if they refuse to use Gunn's script for Vol. 3, which is the latest rumor around Gunn's firing. One of the major studios includes Warner Bros., which has poached filmmakers from Marvel before to help shepherd its struggling DC Extended Universe. Regarding James Gunn leaving Disney, according to the article, multiple sources state that Gunn is "locked in complicated negotiations with Disney over his exit settlement". Although if he's going to continue criticising Disney, it certainly wouldn't be a surprise if he does end up following Gunn out of the door.

Bautista and his Guardians colleagues have stressed they do not endorse Gunn's tweets but believe the director has atoned for his comments and they no longer reflect his current views. The studio pointed to past tweets of Gunn's, in which the filmmaker made light of sensitive topics including rape and pedophilia, that conservative media personalities dug up and brought back into the spotlight as grounds to fire him. While Gunn had already apologized for his attempts at shock humor, Disney still decided not to rehire him, even after a massive campaign to reinstate him.
