Former Premier League striker Alan Shearer has made his prediction for the 2018/19 season and told BBC Sport he expects Manchester City to retain the title.

Having signed Fred, Diogo Dalot and Lee Grant, the Portuguese hoped to bring in two more players but would have been satisfied with just one.

His side face Leicester City in their opening fixture at Old Trafford on Friday and it was put to Mourinho that there was a perception the club had gone backwards over the summer.

"I am not confident, and the market closes today, so it's time, at least for me, to stop thinking about the market because the market will be closed".

Jose Mourinho 'not confident' of deadline day signings
As it stands, Alderweireld and Maguire are considered too expensive, while Bayern Munich have knocked back a loan move for Boateng.

This summer has already seen some mega-deals take place regarding Premier League clubs with Riyad Mahrez moving from Leicester City to Manchester City for a huge £67m, whilst Naby Keita joined Liverpool for £62m in a deal that was agreed on last summer.

"My view is that, first of all, is hard for me to believe we finished second", he said.

Jurgen Klopp's Liverpool did reach they Champions League final, which they lost to Real Madrid, but Mourinho is still bristling over the perception of last season as a disappointment for United, who also lost the FA Cup final to Chelsea.

"I know there has been a lot of talk about pre-season in the press but I am sure behind the scenes, Jose has been giving them the right amount of work".

Barcelona have buy-back option in Yerry Mina Everton deal
Asked specifically about his chat with Silva, he continued: 'I did not need a lot of convincing. Everton always was a big option for me, especially after speaking with the coach, Marco Silva.

"Since nine years, every season - except the first when I arrived at Barcelona". It is hard for me to understand we finish second.

"Of course it's hard to understand for people in football that Tottenham didn't sign or sell players, but sometimes in football you need to behave differently", he said in his press conference earlier today, as per The Mirror.

He added that he feels Manchester City will simply be too good for their rivals, commenting: "I said at the end of last season that to go down as an all-time great team, they need to be serial winners and defend their title, and I think they will do that".

'I said during pre-season - it looked like I was saying something absolutely out of order, something insane - but I repeat: pre-season is hard when you don't have your players to work, it's as simple as that'.
