It may be a new season but there won't be many new faces on show for Man United after the club failed to sign a centre-back before this evening's summer transfer deadline.

And the Portuguese coach simply suggested that the first three months of the season would prove whether his warning was right or wrong.

United insist Pogba is not for sale, just 48 hours before Jose Mourinho's side kick off their Premier League campaign at home to Leicester, less than 24 hours left to England's end of summer transfers at 5pm on Thursday.

"At the moment words are not important. You'll see which teams are candidates".

The signing of Fred from Shakhtar Donetsk to give energy to the midfield was a long-term project, with serious negotiations starting back in February.

"I think Manchester United are a little bit desperate at this present moment which is not like Manchester United and certainly not like Mourinho".

"A lie repeated 1,000 times is still a lie, but the perception of people is that it's true".

"In football, you need time to work and you need players on the pitch to work with which we didn't have until now".

"I like my players and my group".

"It will be a hard season for everybody, not just for us".

"I'm going to enjoy this season".

Leicester City - the visitors to Old Trafford for Friday's Premier League opener - are reported to have rejected an offer in the region of £60million for their England global Harry Maguire, while Tottenham's Toby Alderweireld has also been long touted as a United target.

Mourinho, who will be without the likes of Nemanja Matic, Antonio Valencia, Ander Herrera and Marcos Rojo on Friday, once again bemoaned the lack of preparation time for the start of the season, with many of his players having just returned to training after taking time off following the World Cup.

"I had only two options, Scott (McTominay) or Paul, but if I play Scott I play two kids and a new player, so I asked Paul and he put himself available for the team and he was very, very good for us".

Pogba, meanwhile, could be on the bench against Leicester despite only training for four days since arriving back in Manchester following his triumph with France in Russian Federation.

Paul Pogba, Ashley Young, Fellaini and Jesse Lingard may yet be involved against Leicester tonight.
