Luckily, few of us will ever be put into a situation where we are facing the choice of taking a human life. Even if it is a completely justifiable decision, it is still profoundly difficult.

Recently George Stephanopoulos reported a story about a teenaged mother who was confronted with a life or death situation, and responded with remarkable clarity under pressure. You are not going to believe her 911 call.
Young Sarah McKinley was recently widowed when her husband and the father of her infant daughter passed away after losing his fight with cancer. Just a few short days after living through the tragedy of becoming a single mother and widow at such a young age, she was confronted with one of the most terrifying experiences in anyone’s life.

Sitting at home with her baby one night, she heard two men trying to force their way into her home near Oklahoma City. She grabbed her baby and phone and ran into the bedroom, where she did something remarkable.

Sarah called 911 and reported the break-in in progress, but then she asked a very unusual question:

“I’ve got two guns in my hand. Is it OK to shoot him if he comes in this door?”

In an exchange caught on the 911 system archives, she asks permission to use lethal force to defend herself.

The dispatcher who answered Sarah’s call, Diane Graham, replied, saying “Well, you have to do whatever you can do to protect yourself. I can’t tell you that you can do that, but you do what you have to do to protect your baby.”

Sarah was informed that the intruders needed to be within the home, and was reassured that police were in route. Just then, the two men managed to smash in her door.

Moments later, twenty four year old Justin Shane Martin was dead. He had been wielding a large hunting knife and was accompanied by a co-conspirator. The second, as yet unidentified man retreated into the night, only to later turn himself over to local police.

While it was certainly a deeply traumatic moment for the young mother, she feels justified in her actions, saying “You have to make a choice, you or him. I chose my son over him.”

Local police responded a short time later, and determined the shooting to be entirely justified. McKinley will face no charges regarding this incident, although no further information has been released concerning the fate of the second attacker.

Mckinley did recognize Martin and believes that he may have been stalking her for some time before the home invasion.

Many people have taken to social media to show their support for Ms. McKinley, saying things like:

“First off very sorry that you lost your husband, but you have done the right thing by defending your baby and yourself and not to mention the other women you have saved from this piece of shit that you took out…..Need an help or someone to talk to i am sure many of us here would do what we could.”- Jim Wells 919

“good job to momma. staying calm and collected through the whole ordeal is something I don’t think I’d be able to do, and I’ve spent years hunting and mentally running scenarios. just goes to show, when things go pear shaped, some people are better than others at handling the ensuing situation.”- Jeremiah Bates
